Road trip cost calculator

Plan a realistic road trip budget by estimating fuel or charging cost, then adding tolls, parking, ferry fees, and other road expenses.

Road trip cost formula

Road trip cost = fuel or charging cost + tolls + parking + extras

A 250-mile gas trip at 30 MPG and $3.50 per gallon costs about $29.17 in fuel. Add $18 in tolls and $12 in parking, and the full road trip estimate becomes $59.17.

Costs people forget

  • Tolls, bridges, ferries, and paid express lanes.
  • Hotel, airport, event, or city parking.
  • Public charging price differences for EV trips.
  • Extra fuel use from roof boxes, cargo, traffic, or weather.

Use two estimates before a long drive

For a long road trip, it is useful to run a low estimate and a high estimate. The low estimate can use normal MPG or EV efficiency. The high estimate can assume higher gas prices, public fast charging, worse efficiency, and extra route fees.

This gives you a more practical budget range than a single exact-looking number.

Should I include meals or hotels?

This calculator focuses on driving cost. For a full travel budget, add lodging, meals, attractions, and emergency cash separately.

Can I compare two routes?

Yes. Run the calculator once for each route using that route's distance, tolls, and expected driving conditions.
