Gas vs EV cost calculator

Compare the same trip in a gas vehicle and an electric vehicle. Change gas price, MPG, electricity price, EV efficiency, charging loss, and road extras to see which option is cheaper.

Comparison formulas

Gas cost = miles / MPG x gas price
EV cost = miles x kWh per mile x electricity price x charging-loss adjustment

The difference is the estimated savings for that trip. If the gas trip costs $29.17 and the EV trip costs $14.03, the EV estimate is $15.14 cheaper before any different route or charging-stop considerations.

What changes the winner?

  • Higher gas prices usually improve the EV comparison.
  • Higher fast-charging prices can reduce EV savings.
  • Large SUVs and trucks usually use more fuel or electricity.
  • Cold weather, high speed, and hills can lower efficiency for both.

Break-even gas price

A useful comparison number is the break-even gas price. That is the gas price where the fuel cost would match the EV charging cost for the same distance. If the break-even price is below your local gas price, the EV trip is cheaper on energy cost. If it is above your local gas price, gas may be cheaper for that specific trip.

Gas vs EV cost FAQ

Should I use home electricity or public charger prices?

Use the price you expect for that trip. Home charging is best for local driving, while road trips often need public charger prices.

Does this compare maintenance or purchase price?

No. This page compares trip energy cost only. Insurance, maintenance, depreciation, taxes, and purchase price are separate ownership costs.
